Zooni (Kajol), a beautiful blind Kashmiri girl, goes to New Delhi to perform at a traditional function with her friends. In Delhi, Zooni meets Rehan (Aamir Khan), their tour guide. A flirt by nature with a flair for poetry that he uses to woo girls, Rehan was fascinated by Zooni from the very first moment. They fell in love.
Although Zooni's friends warn her about this roadside Romeo's flirting attitude, she believes that Rehan is the only one who has the ability to give her all what she wanted in life. Then they decided to get married.
Before marriage, Zooni undergoes an operation to regain her eyesight, but what she first sees is the tattered, burnt clothes of Rehan, which causes her to think that Rehan died in a recent terrorist attack.
Meanwhile, Tyagi (Tabu), a special agent in the Anti-Terrorist Unit, finds out that the bomb blast was carried out by a clever minded person who stays hidden in the shadows without revealing his identity to anyone. Now the hunt begins. It was revealed that the culprit behind the blast is none other than Rehan, who is still alive.
Once again, Rehan meets Zooni, but she is unable to recognize him, because for her Rehan is "dead." The story takes a turn from here when Zooni and Rehan get thrown into emotional turmoil. Now she must take a decision to choose between the "greater of the two goods" or "lesser of two evils," which her father (Rishi Kapoor) once mentioned to her as she starts her journey to explore and discover life on her own. She chooses the "lesser of two evils."
I believe that every movie has one or another flaws. No movie is perfect. This is the case with Yash Raj's latest venture "Fanaa," which has received balanced reviews from the critics so far.
Considering the hype that revolved around the movie, "Fanaa" has failed to live up to its great expectations, according to some critics. So does this mean that the chance of the movie doing well at the box-office is small? Well, not at all. The movie is overall entertaining and with many high points, it cinematically satisfies.
Overall, "Fanaa" is a powerful story with a climax that will not only take you by surprise, but also leave you in complete shock. Cinematically speaking, the film is a well-balanced movie with an interesting and offbeat story.
Some critics point out that its main weak point is its poorly written script. I would rather say the weak point lies in the length and pace of the movie at certain points, especially during the second half. The amazing cinematography beautifully composed by Ravi K. Chandran, the excellent dialogue, the action scenes and the top-notch background score are among the high points. Also, the wonderful music by duo Jatin-Lalit is memorable.
But the highest caliber of the movie goes to the acting. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and the hugely popular actress Kajol give unforgettable performances with their amazing onscreen chemistry, keeping in mind that this is the first time they have been paired together. Kajol's strong comeback after marriage and motherhood makes this one of her strongest performances of her career, which is undoubtedly quite a treat for her fans.
Aamir Khan and the rest of the cast also played their parts well.
After the huge success of his 2004 hit "Hum Tum," director Kunal Kohli is now awaiting the box-office response for his film. With the movie already embarked on an impressive start at the box-office, it's quite imminent that "Fanaa" will appear as a winner.
